BACK in his quarters, Graham awakened late the following afternoon. Long, heavy slumber had done much to refresh him, and now, after he had prepared a belated breakfast, he examined papers and mail. One thick envelope looked important. He tore an end off and drew out a single written sheet and a second envelope. The sheet contained a short note:

My Dear Professor Graham:

The inclosed envelope was found in the desk of the late Professor Charles Alton. He apparently had just addressed it when he met with a fatal accident. Should you desire further particulars, you may communicate with me at the above address. I remain, etc.,
